What I'm up to

Last update: July 2022

An overview of stuff that I'm working on, and other stuff that keeps me occupied. Inspired by the movement of /now pages.

This month’s been a bit different for us as we’ve been staying at my in-laws. Initially just to decompress a bit after our move out of the UK, but now because of the heatwave in Europe. Traveling through Portugal during this time — like we initially planned — seems like a very bad idea with the temperatures and forest fires, so we’ve been staying put for now.

It’s nice though, we’ve been swimming in a nearby lake almost every day and I’ve worked from the balcony a lot as well.

Boords

At Boords, we started working on a feature that’s been requested a lot over the last few years, and I’m happy to see where it’s going. More news to follow soon I hope!

Sound Design

I’ve been trying to fit in some Sound Design practice when I had some free time, and I’ve managed to do two redesigns that I’m really happy with, one for a lego game and one for some Mass Effect abilities. In both cases, I did not rely on libraries much, and mostly created my own source material for the sounds. This was a success in my eyes :).

It’s already been about a year since I seriously started practicing Sound Design. I’ve been trying to find time here and there to write a little article for my website in which I share some experiences and resources that I found useful. It’s on its way.

It’s nice to see I’ve made progress in the last year. Like with any skill, it’s a good feeling to think: “I made that, and it sounds good!”. Still, plenty to learn I think, and this next month I hope to work on some other parts of the discipline.

Stuff I enjoyed recently

With us staying at my in-laws, our usual diet of entertainment has been absent. I do miss my Star Trek: Strange New Worlds a bit, but that is not going anywhere 😉.

Reading

This month my wife and I have finished the audiobook of Terry Pratchett’s Lords and Ladies. Since we’ve both read most of the Discworld books fairly recently, we’ve been looking for other humorous authors to read. We found Steven Fry’s reading of some of P.G. Wodehouse’s stories in The Jeeves Collection, and have been enjoying that a lot.
