What I'm up to

Last update: April 2021

An overview of stuff that I'm working on, and other stuff that keeps me occupied. Inspired by the movement of /now pages.

Projects

At Boords, we released some neat new features last month, amongst which a new guided tour functionality. In the end, I decided to make my own solution. I even wrote a blogpost about it!

Outside of work, I’ve been very happy tinkering with my website recently. It feels very satisfying in a similar way as maintaining a garden. I’ve been making a lot of minor changes, some of them to accompany the blog post (syntax highlighting for example), but also some tweaks for SEO and related things.

One of the bigger changes is that I’ve now created a proper page for music. I’ve made some nice pieces of music over the years that I felt like sharing, especially now that I’m regularly creating again by making stuff for my partner. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s a main menu item, but for now it’s accessible through the work page.

I decided to self-host the sound files rather than embedding from SoundCloud. Obviously SoundCloud is great, but there’s something reassuring about hosting it yourself.

In the back of my head I’m starting to think of some design ideas for an actual visual update of my website. I want to give some parts a bit more of an informal feel. I wrote a bit about this in this post.

re:slump

Last month I wrote that I felt that I was in a bit of a slump. I’m happy to say I’m generally feeling a lot better; stable, content, satisfied and free.

Entertainment

This month we started watching X-Files and Schitt’s creek.

X-Files

We’re not usually one for “cop shows”, but the X-Files hardly qualifies as such anyway. It’s nice to indulge in a bit of mystery sometimes, and this show delivers. It’s also such a breath of fresh air to see main characters like this — the combination of competent, thoughtful, sensitive and introverted protagonists is really quite rare.

Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek has has been a bit of a surprise for us. Purely based on the premise and the Netflix cover images we didn’t really give it a chance until it was recommended to us. We’re glad we did, because it’s turning out to be a great show on so many levels. I felt like writing a lot more about it, so I’ve written a longer post about the show.

Other stuff

My partner and I are playing some Elder Scrolls Online again after a long hiatus. On those days or evenings where we’re not entirely sure what to do, exploring the world and lore of the Elder Scrolls series is a pretty nice way of spending some time together. I wrote a bit more about the game last year.

We’re still going through Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series in the form of audiobooks. Currently we’re listening to Raising Steam.
